What We’ve Accomplished Together
Since being elected to the Minneapolis City Council in 2023, I have worked diligently to move our city forward. It is an honor to serve our community as your City Council Member.
In my first year on the Council, we have accomplished a lot together as a Ward and as a City. We’ve made real progress towards revitalizing commercial corridors in Downtown and Uptown, we’ve increased investments in comprehensive public safety services, we’ve made our city more climate friendly, and we’ve won hard-fought victories for labor. I’m proud of my approach to inclusive constituent services.
I have led with transparency, putting residents first and addressing present needs while planning for the future. To serve Ward 7 constituents, I have hosted 10 community engagement forums, attended 36 neighborhood association meetings, sent 24 newsletters and resolved more than 2,000 constituent cases.
With Council investment, our comprehensive public safety system has continued to improve. Our community deserves a prompt, appropriate and effective response to every safety incident. We passed a new police union contract in July that has helped recruitment efforts with a 45% increase in police applications. We have also advanced complementary services. A recent analysis of Minneapolis safety by the NYC School of Law showed that the city is currently redirecting 9% of its calls for service to non-police services like 311, Traffic Control, and the Behavioral Crisis Response team. I have championed safety ambassador pilots, funded a new crime prevention specialist position for the 5th precinct, and ensured accountability and data collection from violence interrupter providers.
We have made strides towards addressing our housing crisis. In the past year, I authored an ordinance that has made it easier for vacant downtown offices to be converted into new housing. Council also invested in shelter providers like Agate and Avivo that provide low-barrier housing solutions to people experiencing homelessness. I supported renters through mandatory disclosures and eviction protections. I have supported Missing Middle housing projects in the Ward and approved housing development plans. Together, we will ensure that Minneapolis continues to grow its housing stock at all levels and make sure everyone has a roof over their head.
Our city has seen drastic changes to commercial retail and labor markets over the last four years—often at the cost of our Downtown and Uptown commercial corridors. In the past year, I have worked hard with my colleagues and the Mayor to ensure that we are investing in targeted revitalization approaches. This year, we launched the Vibrant Storefronts initiative which has brought artists and arts organizations right here to Ward 7 in Loring Park, as they invigorate currently-vacant commercial spaces. I funded a technical assistance panel for Uptown that will be implemented in 2025. I have also been consistently communicating with business leaders in our Ward to make sure they have constant access to city departments and resources and ensure that their needs aren’t left out of the conversation. I’m proud to have supported labor protections in various industries as they fight for dignified working conditions. Over the next four years, I plan to continue these important conversations so that Downtown and Uptown can thrive.
We are becoming a more climate conscious city. We secured major victories this year by increasing access to public transportation with Municipal Consent for the Blue Line Extension and opening up the B Line and E Line BRT corridors in Uptown. I also authored a resolution and budget amendment to push the city towards a zero-waste future where building materials and household waste is diverted from the incinerator and landfills. As the Chair of the new Climate and Infrastructure Committee, I led on tracking progress towards our Climate Equity Plan and ensuring accountability from utility providers. From investments in our roads and parks to maintenance of boulevards, street lights, we are pushing Minneapolis to become a leader in sustainability, climate action and walkable neighborhoods.
It has been my honor to serve you as your Ward 7 City Council Member. I am hopeful and optimistic about what we can accomplish together in the next four years. Our movement is deeply rooted in the community and puts people first. Together, we can continue to make positive changes that will uplift each and every one of our neighbors as we make Minneapolis a beacon for progress. I invite you to join me in this movement.
